Description
█ Are you worried about your health? Do you want to lose weight? Are you a diabetic concerned about your blood glucose levels? Then “A Low GI Diet – Glycemic Index Search” is the perfect tool for you. For the last 2 years this iPhone and iPod Touch app has been helping 1,000s of people maintain a healthy diet by showing them the GI score for thousands of everyday food items. Now with this latest update you can also check the Glycemic Load. Arguably an even better indicator of the health value of the foods you eat.
────────────────
Carbohydrates release glucose into the bloodstream as they break down. Some carbohydrates break down faster than others. The Glycemic Index (or GI) is a measure of how fast different foods break down, with 100 representing glucose itself.
Low GI Foods (GI of 55 or less) release glucose slowly and are considered healthy. Some examples are fruit, such as apples and peaches, or pasta.
Medium GI Foods (GI between 56 and 69) release glucose more rapidly so are not as healthy as Low GI Foods. Potatoes are an example of Medium GI Foods.
High GI Foods (GI over 70) release glucose the fastest and are the least healthy. Some examples are white bread and white rice.
Glycemic Load (or GL) is a new measure added in this update. It combines the GI score of a food and the amount of carbohydrates in that food.
Low GL Foods (GL of 10 or less) are considered most healthy.
Medium GL Foods (GL between 11 and 19) are in the middle.
High GL Foods (GL over 20) are the least healthy.
Generally GI foods are also low GL foods. But some high GI foods such as watermelon (GI=72) are low GL Foods (GL=4). This is because watermelon contains a very low amount of carbohydrates.
────────────────
This app enables you to search a list of over 2,000 foods using multiple and/or partial word searches. Simply press the search box and enter your search via the keypad. You can also scroll through the items. Then click on the row of your choice and the full text of the food will appear followed by it's Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, serve size and carbs per serve.

Worth the money

Very good app. No it doesn't have every food but none of the do. I take it with me to restaurants
Disappointing for the price!

Useless without knowing serving sizes!
Very helpful for me

Low glycemic eating does seem intuitive but not always. I needed a little help looking up foods to truly know the GI. This little program is simple and easy to use and relatively comprehensive. I does not have every imaginable food choice but overall great. A good value for my uses.

Excellent app. Those looking for eggs etc need to go to glycemicindex.com and learn more about the GI to see why these foods are not included. They are just displaying their ignorance about the GI. This is an excellent app for diabetics needing to know the GI of certain foods.

Have you heard of chicken breast that isn't battered. Please hire a qualified person and fix this worthless program !
informative, great app

This app does exactly what it says. It seems like the bad reviews are from people that don't really understand g.i. values. Foods with carbs are listed, foods without aren't (like battered vs. grilled chicken). The orange juice value is correct. My only recommendation would be to also list the glycemic load.
Incomplete

I like this app, but it could be much better, like dividinginto food categories, and giving a serving size...
Incomplete with contradictory info

Beef stew with potatoes appeared in low, med, and high GI index. lots of food missing. I hope they update this list soon!

This app is exactly what I was looking for. I have the detailed spreadsheets that compare multiple products -- or the same product from multiple countries. But now that I'm familiar with the GI / GL concepts (and their variability), I just needed a quick reference tool to use if I'm shopping, at a potluck meal, or just considering eating something that's not on my normal, everyday list. I see that one reviewer vented over the rating for orange juice, but according to my other resources "50" is about the mean of the various tests completed globally. This app is easy to use, intuitive, and quick. Perfect.
Excellent app informative and simple to use

I encourage every body must have application.

Lacks many features that would make it more accurate and useful. Serving size, fat, carb, sugar, and fiber content should be included. Fiber counter acts carb. Also, many high sugar content foods are marked green. And a carb tracking feature would be nice so you can track your daily consumption. Buy the low gi diet book by rick gallop, much more informational and I was successful using his tips.
Great! Does exactly what it says it will...

This app is awesome it does just what it says it will. It gives you the Glycemic Index of a given food. And for those that question it's accuracy, you are simply exposing your own lack of knowledge about the Glycemic Index.
Simple & straightforward

I don't know why this app has so many bad reviews. It's oversimplifies the whole GI issue, but it is meant to be a quick, convenient guide - not help someone manage a serious health issue. Also, some people who have posted bad reviews are confusing a food's GI with its sugar content and they are actually not the same thing. So if you are looking for a simple app to help you select foods with lower GIs, I'd advise you to ignore some of these reviews and download this cool and fairly priced program!
Well thought out application; responsive developer.

This application does exactly what it says it does, makes it easy to look up the glycemic index of foods. Had been using my laptop and an online site that was nowhere near as clear. Bravo! Contacted the developer with a suggestion for filtering of ratings, so one could, for example, choose to scroll through the list of all low GI foods, and they were very responsive to trying to implement the feature in a future update. Highly recommended.
Lacking features - over priced

Good to see an app like this however it's thin on features - I hope more come with updates such as the ability to show all fruit in the low glycemic range rather than hunting through them - I'd loose the cheesy GUI also and do something more native to the system - good start though
Poor app

The program provides the GI. BFD.. Pastries and other processed sweets are high, naturally sweet foods (apples) are middle GI and high protein and high fat foods w/o added sugar are low.
To make it worst when you search a food, a list of selections comes up without any number. After making the selection, you get a new screen with only one number...the GI. If your only giving us one number why can't it just be added to the orginal search list so I can scroll through rather than going back and forth between screens.
not good

this is a very inaccurate and incomplete app.
Could be better

This app is ok. I am cheap when it comes to apps, so I was apprehensive about this purchase. I was left a bit disappointed in the app.
The interface isn't as user friendly as it could be and there are obvious errors. Fish is not a 50 in the glycemic index!
I wish I could look things up by catagory, for instance fruit, so I could compare. I would also like to see serving sizes on the app.
Overall I think this should be free or at least $.99 or $1.99. I hope they do an update and fix some of the errors.
Not so much

Orange juice is a low GI food? On what planet? It is one of the worst things you can drink if you have blood sugar issues. For that and a few more obvious blunders, this app is a no go.
Carbcounter review/ poor

You don't even list cucumbers. Why don't you list the amount of carbs and fiber and a way to keep track of carbs & amount your eating all in one program.
That is amazing!

I would advise it to anyone who wants to loose weight healthy and easily! Love it!
